APPSA Gauteng Chapter News (October 2016)

According to available statistics one in every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Most of us have experienced this or has been challenged by this fatal condition in our families or amongst friends and colleagues. Early detection, by mammogram and self-examination are vital to the outcome of early diagnoses.

October of every year is traditionally Breast Cancer month and is celebrated by thousands of people all over the world by displaying a pink sash or pin in support of those affected. The Gauteng Chapter came out in support of this by wearing pink at our last study day and inviting a specialist in the nursing profession that is passionate about caring for cancer patients. Certainly a daunting task, but never the less, bringing compassion and empathy to patients and their families.

Ethical issues lie at the heart of a caring Profession. Every hospital and clinic display their ethical values on notice boards, in handouts, and through the media. Often, however, these values fall by the wayside and is worth no more than the paper it is written on. Our second speaker did an in-depth presentation of something that should be uppermost in our minds.

However, not all is doom and gloom. Our Laughter Therapist had everybody in hysterics with laughter. You have to laugh at yourself, the world, situations that you experience and also at life. Not an easy thing, but a little laughter in every situation will go a long way to keep you running and avoid being stressed.

Once again we have come to the end of another year, and what a bumper year it was for APPSA Gauteng. We scheduled 4 workshops and all of them were very successful. An average of 110 delegates attended each of these programmes. What an achievement!! Congratulations APPSA Gauteng! You make us proud!

Thank you to all our friends from commerce. There is no way that we will achieve any success without you. Thank you to Ina and her team at Med hold. Every day was meticulously planned and executed. We salute you!

Summer holidays are around the corner, and Christmas festivities are on all calendars.

Enjoy, have fun, but more than anything be safe! To those on holiday travel safely, to those on duty, never forget you are where you are most needed and appreciated.

The President Marilyn de Meyer and the Board of the Gauteng Chapter, wish you all a blessed and joyous festive season. Do not forget that next year we are having the best Congress ever in Bloemfontein, but here at home the work will go on. Our first meeting is scheduled for February 2017. So do not forget to put this important date in your diary, it is not to be missed. For Congress purpose, register early, and do not forget to nominate the “Stars” in your operating room for one of our special awards. All the information is available on the APPSA website or from myself and Marilyn.

I would like to leave you with this beautiful Gaelic blessing.

“ May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind always be at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
The rains fall soft upon your fields, and
Until we meet again may God hold you in the palm of His Hand”

Have a wonderful festive season and God Bless
